Local high schoolers participate in American Legion youth government programs
Students from high schools across Los Angeles’ Westside shared their experiences in American Legion youth programs last week during a special dinner held in their honor at Palisades Post 283.
The Sept. 16 dinner recognized students who participated in The American Legion’s Boys & Girls State program and the American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls State program. In recent years, The Legion’s program has expanded to include both young men and women.
While guests waited for dinner, the students took turns describing their experiences, what they learned and the friendships they made while participating in the programs. Their stories were warmly received by a full-capacity room of Legionnaires, Auxiliary members, family members and guests.
The evening came with an unexpected challenge when the Post’s air conditioning temporarily went out, causing the packed room to quickly heat up. Despite the uncomfortable conditions, the students carried on and remained the focus of the evening.
The dinner preceded the regular general membership meetings of both the Legion and Auxiliary.
Post 283 Commander Steve Travali also took time to recognize Past Commander Joe Ramirez, presenting him with a trophy proclaiming him the “Best Dressed Commander.” The lighthearted award played off the kinds of honors handed out at star-studded Hollywood events — and Ramirez’s own famously star-studded cowboy boots.
Travali also recognized another milestone for the Post: achieving 100% membership for the previous year. With the assistance of Sgt.-at-Arms Larry Williams, Travali draped the official 100% membership ribbon over the Post 283 flag, commemorating the achievement.
